Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia Sun Chanthol witnessed the signing during the International Investment Cooperation Event under the theme “Global Wisdom, Mutual Empowerment: International Investment & Cooperation Exchange.” The project is expected to strengthen Cambodia’s inland waterway connectivity, improve logistics competitiveness and create opportunities for industrial, agricultural, urban and tourism development along its route.
“The nearly US$1 billion Funan Techo Integrated Water Resources Management Project marks a significant step in Cambodia’s infrastructure development and investment strategy. Officially signed in Xiamen, China, the agreement brings together China Exim Bank and Funan Techo Coastal Inland Waterways Company for a project expected to improve Cambodia’s connection between inland areas and the sea. Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol described the project as a game changer, highlighting its potential to reduce logistics costs, strengthen competitiveness and establish a “new economic corridor”. Beyond transportation, the project is expected to support industrial zones, logistics hubs, agricultural processing centres, satellite urban developments and tourism, creating opportunities for businesses and investors over the coming decades.”
Cambodia Signs Major Waterway Financing Agreement
The signing represents an important milestone for the Funan Techo Integrated Water Resources Management Project, with financing valued at nearly US$1 billion. The ceremony took place in Xiamen alongside an international investment cooperation event that brought together government representatives, international business leaders and other senior participants.
The event also included representatives from Cambodia’s Ministry of Economy and Finance and Funan Techo Coastal Inland Waterways Co., Ltd., alongside high ranking officials and international business leaders. The involvement of financial and investment stakeholders highlights the wider economic significance attached to the project and its potential role in Cambodia’s future infrastructure development.
Project Seen as a Game Changer for Logistics
Sun Chanthol described the Funan Techo Integrated Water Resources Management Project as a game changer for Cambodia. A central objective is to establish an inland waterway connection to the sea, which is expected to help reduce logistics costs and improve competitiveness in Cambodia’s logistics sector.
Lower transportation costs can be particularly important for businesses involved in manufacturing, agriculture, trade and distribution. Improved waterway connectivity could provide companies with another transportation option while strengthening links between production areas, logistics facilities and markets. The project is therefore being positioned as infrastructure with implications extending beyond transportation itself.
New Economic Opportunities Along the Route
The project is also expected to create a “new economic corridor” and serve as a vibrant economic artery for Cambodia. The government expects a range of economic activities to develop around the route over the coming decades.
Industrial zones, logistics hubs and agricultural processing centres are among the developments expected to benefit. The project is also expected to support satellite urban developments and tourism, creating a broader network of economic activity rather than functioning solely as a water transportation project.
For investors and businesses, this could create opportunities across several sectors as supporting infrastructure and commercial activity develop. Areas connected to logistics, industrial production, agricultural processing, property development and tourism could all become increasingly important as the project progresses.
Cambodia Invites International Investors
Sun Chanthol also used the occasion to encourage international business leaders to explore investment opportunities in Cambodia and grow alongside the country. He emphasised Cambodia’s readiness to welcome, facilitate and cooperate with investors seeking sustainable growth.
The message reflects the government’s broader effort to connect infrastructure development with investment opportunities. By improving connectivity and creating new economic activity around major infrastructure, Cambodia aims to turn transportation improvements into broader commercial opportunities.
A Major Step for Cambodia’s Future Connectivity
The signing of the nearly US$1 billion agreement marks a significant development for Cambodia’s waterway infrastructure and economic connectivity. The project is expected to reduce logistics costs, strengthen competitiveness and support new industrial, agricultural, urban and tourism activity.
Its long term impact will depend on successful implementation and the ability of businesses and communities to take advantage of the opportunities created along the route. Nevertheless, the agreement signals Cambodia’s ambition to use major infrastructure investment as a foundation for stronger connectivity, expanded investment and broader economic development.
