Cambodian Products Reach 23,000 International Supermarkets and Mini-Marts Worldwide

More Cambodian processed products are gaining access to international retail networks, with the Ministry of Commerce facilitating their promotion across more than 23,000 large supermarkets and renowned mini-mart locations worldwide.

The initiative is part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts to help Cambodian producers, exporters and businesses reach new consumer markets and strengthen their position in increasingly competitive overseas markets.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, it has facilitated 38 transactions and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) while promoting Cambodian products to more than 23,000 supermarkets and mini-mart locations across international markets.

These retail markets are located in the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Japan, China, ASEAN and other markets, according to the Ministry.

Focus Shifts From Export Volume to Product Branding

Commerce Minister Cham Nimul said the initiative is intended not only to increase Cambodia's exports but also to strengthen the international recognition and presence of Cambodian-made products.

“Our objective is not merely to increase export volumes but to elevate the international branding and presence of Cambodian-made goods,” she said.

The Minister added that placing local producers within international retail networks provides an important opportunity for Cambodian small and medium-sized enterprises to expand their operations and gain more direct access to global consumers.

This approach puts greater emphasis on market access, branding and product competitiveness, rather than focusing solely on the amount of goods exported.

Quality and Packaging Become More Important

The Ministry continues to encourage Cambodian businesses to improve product quality, upgrade packaging and comply with international production standards.

These improvements are considered essential for meeting the requirements of foreign consumers and retailers while strengthening the competitiveness of Cambodian products in global markets.

For local producers, entering an international supermarket network can require more than simply having a product that can be manufactured at scale.

Products also need to meet market-specific requirements related to quality, presentation and production standards.

Cambodia's Exports Reach $24 Billion in First Eight Months

Cambodia exported approximately $24 billion worth of goods during the first eight months of 2026, representing a 19.7% increase compared with the same period last year, according to Ministry of Commerce figures cited by AKP.

SMEs Could Gain From International Retail Access

The Ministry's effort to connect Cambodian producers with international retail networks could be particularly relevant for small and medium-sized enterprises seeking to move beyond domestic markets.

International supermarket and mini-mart networks can provide Cambodian producers with access to larger consumer populations. However, the Ministry's emphasis on product quality, packaging and international standards indicates that market access also depends on businesses being able to meet the requirements of overseas markets.

For Cambodian producers, this creates an opportunity to move from selling primarily through local or regional channels toward developing products with stronger international positioning.

Angkor Times Analysis

The most significant part of Cambodia's latest export push may be the emphasis on where and how Cambodian products are sold, not only how much the country exports.

Facilitating access to more than 23,000 international supermarket and mini-mart locations gives Cambodian producers a potential channel to reach consumers directly in major overseas markets. The Ministry's reported 38 transactions and MoUs also indicate an effort to build commercial relationships around these market opportunities.

At the same time, international shelf space is competitive. Cambodian businesses must compete not only on price but also on quality, packaging, consistency and compliance with market requirements.

The agricultural sector could be particularly important in this diversification effort. Products such as rice, cashews, cassava and rubber provide Cambodia with export categories beyond garments, footwear and travel goods.

The $24 billion in goods exports during the first eight months of 2026, up 19.7% year on year according to Ministry figures, provides the broader trade context. The longer-term opportunity is whether more Cambodian businesses can turn export access into established international brands and sustainable overseas demand.

For SMEs, that could mean moving from simply being an exporter to becoming a recognizable Cambodian consumer brand in international markets.
