Green Season positioned as a national tourism strategy
Huot Hak said the decision to promote the period as the “Green Season” represents more than a change in terminology. He described it as a shift in mindset and part of a focused national tourism strategy.
According to the minister, Cambodia’s Green Season offers visitors a different side of the country, with flourishing nature, fresh greenery, clean air and diverse landscapes creating opportunities for new travel experiences.
The Green Season tourism events are intended to encourage both domestic and international visitors to explore Cambodia during the period and recognise it as a season with its own attractions.
Kampot showcases coastal tourism and gastronomy
The Kampot event focused on the potential of gastronomy tourism alongside the natural beauty of Cambodia’s coastal region.
More than 1,000 participants attended, including national and provincial officials, tourism associations, tourism operators, private-sector representatives, partner organisations, community members, content creators, influencers, KOLs, young people and students.
The event also promoted patriotism, appreciation of Cambodia’s natural and cultural heritage, and participation in the conservation of tangible and intangible heritage and natural resources.
It was organised around the concepts “Tourism Connects Us to Our Land” and “To Love Our Nation, We Must Know Our Land.”
Green Season campaign travels across Cambodia
The Kampot event forms part of a broader Green Season tourism event series taking place across different regions of Cambodia.
Following its launch in Phnom Penh, the campaign moved to Siem Reap, highlighting the province’s heritage and cultural destinations, before travelling to the northeastern region to showcase its natural landscapes and ecotourism potential.
The series then reached the coastal region in Kampot, highlighting the distinctive tourism opportunities of the area.
The ministry said the regional approach is designed to showcase Cambodia’s different tourism identities and experiences while encouraging visitors to explore beyond individual destinations.
The 2026 Green Season Tourism Event series is expected to conclude in Phnom Penh in late October or early November.
Kampot's growing tourism profile
Huot Hak praised the leadership of Kampot Governor H.E. Dr. Mao Thonin, the Kampot Provincial Council and provincial authorities for their efforts to develop the province.
He said continued cooperation among provincial authorities, relevant departments, security forces and local stakeholders has contributed to Kampot becoming increasingly attractive to domestic and international tourists.
The minister also expressed appreciation to successive generations of provincial leaders for laying foundations for Kampot’s continued development.
Angkor Times Analysis
Cambodia’s Green Season campaign is increasingly presenting the rainy-season period as a distinct tourism opportunity rather than simply an off-peak period.
Kampot is particularly relevant to this strategy because the coastal region can combine nature, food, community experiences and leisure travel into a broader visitor proposition. Promoting these experiences during the Green Season could also encourage domestic travellers and international visitors to explore Cambodia at different times of the year.
The nationwide event series further supports a regional tourism approach, using different destinations to demonstrate that Cambodia offers varied experiences beyond its best-known heritage attractions.
For the tourism industry, the key opportunity is to turn the Green Season message into concrete travel experiences that encourage visitors to stay longer, explore more destinations and spend across local tourism businesses.
